Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
