Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover everything he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the negative comments from other people annihilate his dream of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
Phil started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a teaching experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an undying passion for the game of poker. He says that he’s learning every day and is quite humble about his achievements. He knows he makes blunders in each session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Even though Ivey has won some big tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
