Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to play some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The definite improvement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best women players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
