Stu Ungar is thought to be by most to the finest No Limit Texas hold’em Poker gambler ever.
The three time World Poker Champ was born in New York in 1953 and began playing poker prior to reaching his teens.
The young bettor started out playing gin and at the age of 10 had won his initial gin rummy tournament, while on holiday with his mother and father. By the age of fourteen the small poker maestro had become a pro and dropped out of school.
In 1954 Stu entered the record books by winning 10,000 dollars in a gin rummy tournament without dropping a single hand, a record which still stands in New York these days.
The fast speaking superstar has been compared, in poker terms, to athletic superstars such as Joe Namath and Kobe Bryant. Stu had a real talent for wagering poker except in spite of his achievements in Hold em poker, he favored playing gin.
Stu once said that there might several day be a much better No Limit Texas hold em player than him except he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a far better gin player.
In ‘80 Stu Ungar was put on the world map as one of the very best Texas hold em Poker players in the world when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the 1st time. Extraordinarily it was the very first time he had entered the tournament.
The subsequent year he put aside any thoughts that it had been a fluke, by successfully defending his crown. And in 1997 Stu set the record by succeeding his third World poker championship.
But this poker master also fought with drug abuse and a year after winning his 3rd title Stu past away in his hotel room. According to doctors, he had died from cardiac arrest which was caused by his lifestyle.
Stu Ungar had started with absolutely nothing but his ability and expertise for the game which made this poker good a millionaire quite a few times over.
